Massabesic 4

Westbrook 2

It was a tale of two halves Friday afternoon in Waterboro. The Massabesic boys lacrosse team scored four first-half goals to survive Westbrook’s two second-half goals and earn a 4-2 win. Nick Lund scored the game winner and Colby Robinson recorded nine saves in the win.

“In the first half we played the game real well,” said Massabesic head coach Mark Levesque. “In the second half, we started getting out of our game. The kids started getting physical and we started not doing the little things we were doing in the first half.”

The Mustangs scored a pair of goals in the first quarter. Jacob Staples scored the first goal of the game for the Mustangs when he got one by Westbrook goalie Danny Redman for a 1-0 lead. Massabesic took a 2-0 lead late in the first when Ben Comeau ripped one past Redman with 18 seconds left in the quarter.

“It was nice getting fast breaks,” Lund said. “We do better on fast breaks than setting up offense; though we did well with both today. Clearing really helped. When we can get the ball up fast, we usually do better on offense.”

Lund scored the next goal for the Mustangs at 3:20 into the second. He fired a hard shot from just inside the box to give his team a 3-0 lead. Massabesic made it 4-0 with just three seconds left in the half when Brandon Levesque buried the ball on a scrum in front of the net.

The Blue Blazes had several opportunities to score in the first half but Robinson was up to the task and kept them off the scoreboard.

“Colby has been playing fantastic all year,” Coach Levesque said. “Colby was our biggest key against Biddeford with his passes out. He made a few key saves again today. He has come so far this year it’s unbelievable.”

Lund agrees and says Robinson is an extension of the offense.

“Colby is amazing,” he said. “He has really stepped up his game. He’s helping us out a lot with great clearing balls. It’s helping us get into our running offense and that’s what we have been doing well this year.”

Westbrook finally managed to get one by Robinson late in the third. It was Kyle Barrows who finally put one in. He bounced a shot in front of the net that just found the net before sailing over. That made the score 4-1 with 1:28 to go in the third.

Jeff Morse scored the last goal of the game for Westbrook when he stole the ball in the offensive zone and scored with 44 seconds to go in the fourth quarter. By then it was too late and the Mustangs went on to win.

Westbrook fell to 4-6 with the loss while the Mustangs improved to 7-3.
