Chorus presents ?‘The Promise of Light’

The Greater Freeport Community Chorus will present its winter concert, entitled “The Promise of Light,” on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m., at the First Parish Church, 40 Main St., Freeport; and Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2:30 p.m., at the Tuttle Road United Methodist Church, 52 Tuttle Road, Cumberland.

The 70-member chorus is directed by Virgil Bozeman and accompanied by Dorothy Cuprak. The concert’s title piece, “The Promise of Light,” by George Stitt and lyricist Len Schiff, is a haunting melody that reflects their attempt to “write something secular and yet reverent about the December holiday season.”

Tickets are $10 per person or $25 per family and can be purchased from chorus members, at Music and Moore, located at 220 Bath Road in Brunswick, the Freeport Community Center or at the door. For more information, go to www.gfccweb.org.

‘Christmas Winds ’?concert Dec. 11, 16

“Christmas Winds,” holiday music by the Pine Tree Coastal Winds, Freeport’s community concert band, will be presented Tuesday, Dec. 11, 7 p.m., at the Harraseeket Inn Casco Bay Room, 162 Main St. Freeport.; and also Sunday, Dec. 16, 5 p.m., at the Life Source Ministry Church, 34 Grover Lane, Brunswick.

Thrift shop estate ?sale continues

The Freeport Community Thrift Shop will continue its holiday estate sale on weekends at 2 Depot St. (the building that formerly housed S&K Menswear). The hours are Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For more information, go to www.fcsmaine.org.

Sparkle Weekend holiday movie marathon

The Freeport Factory Stage will be hosting a Sparkle Weekend holiday movie marathon on Saturday, Dec. 8, from noon to 8:30 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-serve. Prime seating can be reserved for a donation to be split between the FreeportUSA merchants’ association and the Freeport Community Services Food Pantry. Donations of non-perishable food or cash donations are accepted. The first 200 donors receive a certificate for a free small cone at Ben & Jerry’s.

The movies are: “The Polar Express,” noon; “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,”1:55 p.m.; “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” 2:30 p.m.; “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” 4:05 p.m.; “Elf,” 4:45 p.m.; and “Bad Santa” (18 and over event), 7 p.m.

Winter parking ban

The town of Freeport has announced its annual parking ban, which prohibits parking on all town streets from 11 p.m.-7 a.m. is in effect from Nov. 1 – April 15.

Firewood raffle ?winner named

Freeport’s James and Becky Daniel recently held a fundraising raffle to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation, and said the winner of the cord of wood was Lisa and David Curtis of Freeport.

Becky Daniel said that the raffle raised $952, $300 more than last year’s total. The Daniels, whose 17-year-old daughter Alexandra suffers from epilepsy, do an annual walk to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation, and all of the money raised from the raffle goes to help their fundraising efforts.

“A huge thank you to the community for supporting our cause to bring awareness for epilepsy and purchasing the raffle tickets for a record setting year of fundraising,” Daniel said. “All the money raised will go toward the Maine Walk for Epilepsy in May 2013 to help with research so we can try to find a cure for people living with seizures.”

Daniel also said her family thanked Michelle and Ryan Doherty, the owners of the North Freeport General Store; Herbie Brewer, who donated the cord of wood; and Ken Curtis of the Curtis Roofing Co., who supplied trailers to display and deliver the wood.

Seeking owner ?of injured dog

An injured dog was found in Frankfort near Searsport. The dog is a chocolate/Labrador mix with white markings. It is a neutered male, approximately 8 years old and is wearing a tag stating that it lives in Freeport’s jurisdiction. Anyone with information about the dog’s owner should call Ridge Runner Veterinary Services at 223-2596

Freeport Players present “Radio Hour’

The Freeport Players will be presenting the ninth annual “WFCP Home Time Radio Hour,” on Dec. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Freeport Performing Arts Center, 30 Holbrook St., Freeport.

The Freeport Players will entertain with music from the 1940s, ’50s and early ’60s, from smooth crooning and torch singing to blues and rock. There will be comedy sketches, and the Swingtones return with commercial jingles and a special surprise for fans of swing harmony. The show will also feature special guest appearances by local bands Crabapple Jam, Not Too Shaap and NE Town. Library news and notes

The Freeport Community Library will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 6, for staff training. The library will reopen on Friday, Dec. 7, at 11:30 a.m.

The library will be showing the movie “Brave,” rated PG, as a free after-school movie for kids in grades 6-8 on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 2:20 p.m. The movie is 1 hour and 40 minutes long and free popcorn will be served.

Miss Lisa’s Songs and Stories will be in the Children’s Room on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 10- 11 a.m.

The Thursday midday movie on Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. will be “The King’s Speech,” which is rated R.

The GWC (Giving Children Warmth) program will be making blankets for children in Afghanistan by knitting squares and sewing them together. The group meets on Mondays from 2:45- 4 p.m. to teach volunteers from age 11 through adult to knit.

Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.
