WORCESTER, Mass. – Maine representative Gray-New Gloucester advanced to the Senior League Softball Eastern Regional semifinals by finishing unbeaten in pool play following a 1-0, eight-inning victory over Worcester, Mass., Wednesday.

Gray-New Gloucester, which finished 4-0 for first place in Pool A, plays New Jersey, the pool B runner-up, at 10 a.m. Thursday. A victory will place them in the championship game against Pool A winner Delaware or Connecticut, the Pool B runner-up at 2 p.m.

Taylor Whaley and Kaitlyn Tucker each pitched four innings of Wednesday’s victory.

Whaley allowed a hit and a walk in the first four, and Tucker held Worcester hitless the rest of the way while posting four strikeouts and walking one.

Catcher Emily Harlow led off the eighth with a double, was bunted to third by Sandy Ricardi and scored on deep fly ball by Sam Libby.

Harlow had a strong all-around game. She threw out a runner trying to steal in the second and hit consecutive singles with Heather Chapman in the fifth.

Gray-New Gloucester’s three other wins were over Massachusetts (6-1), Connecticut (4-0) and Rhode Island (15-4).

Maine’s next opponent, West Cumberland, N.J., finished 3-1, recording wins over Maryland (10-0), Pennsylvania (3-0) and New York (1-0). The team was beaten by Delaware, 4-1.

Coach Bill Chapman said he will likely start Whaley.
