The Westbrook School Department has hired two new principals, filling two of the three open positions in the system.

On June 22, the School Committee unanimously voted to approve the nominations of Janet Crawford to be the next principal of Prides Corner School and Falmouth High School Assistant Principal Brian Mazjanis to be the principal of Wescott Junior High School.

Crawford, a longtime Westbrook School Department employee, will be taking over for outgoing Principal John Flaherty, who resigned to take a position in Falmouth.

Crawford has worked as the department’s art coordinator for 22 years. Two years ago, she was also named gifted and talented student coordinator.

This week, Crawford said she has begun working with Flaherty on the transition to a new principal. She said she is anxious for the new school year to begin. “I can’t wait to get started,” she said.

Crawford said she was thrilled at the prospect of being an elementary school principal. “It’s been a dream of mine for a long time,” she said. “I’m just thrilled that it’s happening in Westbrook.”

The Prides Corner job will be a return of sorts for Crawford. When she first started in Westbrook, Crawford said one of her student teaching assignments was at Prides Corner School. “So it will be like going home,” she said.

Mazjanis will be taking over for outgoing Wescott Principal Martha Corkery, who is leaving Westbrook to take a position at the University of New England.

Mazjanis said he is looking forward to coming to Westbrook. “I think it’s a great opportunity,” he said. “I think the school’s in a good place, and I think it will be a fun ride.”

Prior to taking the position at Falmouth High School, Mazjanis worked as an assistant principal in Oxford Hills for four years. Prior to that, Mazjanis was a science teacher at Marshwood High School in South Berwick for five years.

The hiring of Crawford and Mazjanis leaves just one school in the city without a principal. The School Department is still seeking a candidate to fill the vacant position at Saccarappa School. The position was vacant since Principal Sharon Orlando announced her retirement earlier this year.

At the same meeting, the committee also unanimously approved the nomination of Jan Breton to the position of assistant superintendent of schools for curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Breton, who had been the department’s director of curriculum, takes over for outgoing Assistant Superintendent Mike Kane, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

In other news, the cost for a school lunch will be going up next year.

The School Committee unanimously approved a proposal from Food Service Director Jeanne Reilly to increase the price of all school lunches by 5 cents.

The new prices for school lunches next year will be $1.40 for students in kindergarten through eighth-grades and $1.60 for high school students.

In a memo to School Superintendent Stan Sawyer, Reilly said the reason for the increase was to help the department keep pace with increased costs in wages, benefits and supplies.

In addition, Reilly said the department must purchase new ovens for Saccarappa and Prides Corner schools next year. Reilly said she had initially planned to use equipment assistance grant money from the Department of Education to purchase the equipment, but she has found out that grant money will not be available this year.

School Committee Chairman Colleen Hilton said even with the increased prices, Westbrook still is comparable to other districts. A survey supplied to the School Committee shows that in Gorham, elementary school students pay $1.60 for lunch and high school students pay $1.85. Elementary school students in SAD 6 pay $1.55 for lunch, while students in SAD 6’s Bonny Eagle High School pay $1.75.

The June 22 meeting was the final School Committee meeting for this school year, said Hilton. She said the School Committee will be taking the entire month of July off and will not meet again until Aug. 24.
