ATLANTA – Kris Medlen is replacing Jair Jurrjens in the Atlanta Braves’ rotation and will start Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday that Medlen will move to the rotation unless the team trades for a starting pitcher before Tuesday. Jurrjens was in the bullpen for Saturday night’s game against the Phillies.

Medlen was 5-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 starts in 2010, when he was 6-2 overall. He missed most of last season following right elbow ligament-replacement surgery. He is 1-1 with one save and a 2.48 ERA in 38 games this season.

“He’s been great, he’s been really, really good,” said Gonzalez of Medlen. “He’s been valuable to us. That’s why it’s a hard decision to take him out of the bullpen.”

Atlanta’s rotation has been boosted by the addition of Ben Sheets, the former All-Star who improved to 3-0 with Friday night’s 6-1 victory against the Phillies. Sheets has allowed one run in three starts.

NATIONALS: Washington center fielder Bryce Harper was scratched from the lineup because of a stomach virus.

The decision was announced about 30 minutes before the Nationals played at Milwaukee.

Harper leads NL rookies with 52 runs. He was replaced by Corey Brown.

RANGERS: Outfielder Josh Hamilton was out of the starting lineup against the White Sox because Manager Ron Washington wanted to give him a mental break.

Hamilton, who is batting .145 in July, was booed by his home fans Friday night after striking out twice against Chris Sale of the White Sox.

“He’s the manager,” Hamilton said. “He makes the decisions. I just live with them.”

ASTROS: Houston promoted right-hander Armando Galarraga from the minors to start against Pittsburgh.

The Astros purchased Galarraga’s contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Houston also claimed infielder-outfielder Steve Pearce off waivers from Baltimore. Pearce will join the team Sunday.

Left-handed pitcher Fernando Abad was optioned to Triple-A. The Astros outrighted right-handers Enerio Del Rosario and Aneury Rodriguez to Oklahoma City.

BLUE JAYS: Outfielder Jose Bautista isn’t expected to return immediately when his time on the 15-day disabled list concludes Wednesday. He swung the bat for the first time since injuring his left wrist.

Bautista, who led the majors in home runs in both 2010 and 2011, was hurt in the eighth inning of a July 16 game at Yankee Stadium, grabbing his wrist in pain after hitting a long foul ball.

He swung a light fungo bat, then his regular bat before the game against Detroit, and took a few swings off the tee.
