While police search for a man who robbed a Freeport bank Monday, at least one bank official in town wants her staff to receive additional training in the event a robbery happens there.
As of noon Tuesday, police had not caught up with the man, who made off with an undisclosed amount of money from Norway Savings Bank, 8 Mallett Drive, at 2:48 p.m. The man ran off toward Interstate 295, a short distance from Norway Savings, on the other side of Mallett Drive.
It was the second armed robbery just a little more than two weeks in Freeport. KeyBank, at 135 Main St., was robbed on July 17. Police arrested Jimmy Odong of Portland on July 24, and charged him with the KeyBank robbery.
Michelle Barker, assistant branch manager at Bath Savings Institution, 189 Lower Main St., said Tuesday morning that she “called the police this morning to see if they would come down to do a robbery training with us.”
She added, “Knowledge is power.”
According to Freeport police, the man entered Norway Savings, displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the teller. No one was injured, but the man got away with the money, police said. Detectives from Freeport and Brunswick processed the crime scene.
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the robbery is asked to contact Detective Gino Bianchini of the Freeport police at 865-4800.
