The Westbrook High softball team is battling for a spot in next month’s Western Maine Class A tournament with just three games left to play in the regular season. The Blazes dropped a 16-1 decision at home to Thornton on Tuesday and their record slipped to 5-8.

Westbrook was tied with Marshwood for the No. 11 position in the most recent Heal Point standings. Only 11 of the 17 teams in the region get into the post-season and the Blazes are looking to be one of those teams.

The Blazes were scheduled to face Gorham on Wednesday, May 23, and then travel to Marshwood on Friday before finishing the season at home against Noble on Tuesday. Obviously, Friday’s game against the Hawks in South Berwick will go a long way toward deciding who’s in and who’s out of this year’s West A playoffs.

Westbrook pitcher Brittni Keites earned the win over Massabesic on Monday while Kristina Pettis and Maria Romano paced the offense with two hits apiece.

Gorham looks to improve playoff position

The Gorham softball team is assured of a tournament berth with an 8-4 record and the No. 8 seed in this week’s West A Heal Points race. The Rams topped No. 6 Windham by a 10-4 score on Monday night at home and they followed that up with a 6-0 shutout of Marshwood on Tuesday.

Gorham pitcher Kelsey Crowe improved her record to 4-0 on the season going all seven innings and allowing just five hits.

Krista Keens and Rachele Burns led the offense with two hits each as the Rams pounded Marshwood pitchers for 10 hits on the day.

Gorham’s final week of play includes a game at Westbrook on Wednesday, May 23, as well as games against Noble (Thursday, May 24), Deering (Friday, May 25), and Kennebunk (Tuesday, May 29).

Bonny Eagle could avoid a prelim

The Bonny Eagle softball team was at No. 5 in this week’s West A Heal Point standings. And that position is significant because the top five teams in the regional tournament earn byes into the quarterfinal round while teams 6-11 face one another in prelim games that will determine the remaining three teams who’ll play in the quarters.

If these standings remain the same, the Scots would face-off against No. 4 South Portland in the quarterfinal round. Those two teams played one another on Monday in South Portland where the Riots scored a 3-2 victory.

On Tuesday, the Scots pounded Cheverus pitching with a 12-run first inning to take a 13-1 win over the Stags in Standish.
