Learn a new dish from around the world at the Freeport Community Center. This month, Lindsay Sterling will be featuring Dominican beans, rice and tostones. Public supper serving up spaghetti
The Freeport Save our Neighborhoods Coalition will be holding a public supper on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Freeport Masonic Hall on 33 Mallet Drive. The dinner includes spaghetti, sauce, salads, breads, desserts and beverages. Donations are welcome at the door. The Freeport Save Our Neighborhoods Coalition is a non-partisan community-focused organization of Freeport residents dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of residential property values and quality of life in Freeport’s neighborhoods.
Women’s Club meeting
The Freeport Women’s Club will meet on Friday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Freeport Community Library. Dr. Fred Cichoki, science professor at Senior College, University of Maine, will present a program, “Energy, Ecology and the Environment, and What You Should Know Before it’s Too Late.”
Refreshments will follow the program and all are welcome.
General assistance rules topic of hearing
The town of Freeport has scheduled a public hearing regarding proposed amendments to the general assistance ordinance concerning maximum levels of housing assistance. The hearing is Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Merriconeag Waldorf School, 57 Desert Road, Freeport.
Information can be obtained at the town clerk’s office, the town manager’s office, the Freeport Community Library and the town’s website.
Papers available ?for council seat
Nomination papers are available at the town clerk’s office for a seat on the Town Council for District 1. Nomination papers with no fewer than 50 signatures are due to the town clerk’s office no later than 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8. The special election will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Town Hall Council Chambers, 30 Main St., from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. The election is to fill remainder of the term of Councilor Sara Gideon, who resigned last month. The term ends in November 2013.
Freeport Lioness-Lions set craft fair and luncheon
The Freeport Lioness-Lions Club is hosting its 15th-annual craft fair and “fish chowdah and chili luncheon” on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Harraseeket Grange Hall on Elm Street in Freeport.
The lunch runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. with homemade fish chowder, chili, steamed hot dogs, homemade pies, soda and water.
The craft fair features fresh balsam wreaths, jewelry, hand knit items, homemade cards and ornaments, stained glass and photography. Free coffee is available for shoppers. There will be a raffle with many items donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting any Freeport Lioness-Lion Club member and ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Freeport High School class fundraisers
Students at Freeport High School are selling items to the public to raise funds for their individual classes. Items are available through Nov. 7, with the exception of the class of 2013, whose members are selling a variety of citrus fruit from Golden Harvest in Florida until Nov. 26.
The class of 2014 is selling a variety of wreaths from Down on the Farm in Danforth; the class of 2015 is selling a variety of poinsettias from Longfellow Greenhouses in Manchester; and the class of 2016 is selling pies from Judy’s Kitchen in Durham.

Recreational shellfish licenses available
The town of Freeport is accepting applications for recreational shellfish licenses, which are now open for non-residents. Licenses can be purchased at the town clerk’s office during regular business hours on a first-come, first-served basis. Residential recreational licenses are $16, non-residential recreational licenses are $27 and a three-day recreational license is $20.
Library news and notes
The Freeport Community Library will be featuring the photography of Eric Johnsen, a self-taught landscape photographer and camera collector. The “Reflections of Nature” exhibit is a culmination of over seven years of his work. The exhibit will run through November.
The library will be hosting a children’s event, “Wind over Wings” on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room. Children who attend will be a few feet away from a magnificent bird of prey. Each bird will have a unique story that will inspire with courage, adaptability and resilience.
Students in grades 6- 8 are invited for an after-school movie on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 2:20 p.m. The movie is “Johnny English Reborn,” rated PG and is 1 hour 41 minutes long. Free popcorn is provided.
A seminar, “Tech Talk: Reap the online benefits of having a Portland Public Library card,” is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14. at 6:30 p.m. All Cumberland County residents age 5 and older are eligible for a free Portland Public Library card and its online benefits. This seminar will feature some of the Portland library’s online resources such as HeritageQuest for genealogy, classical music and video, Mango Languages for learning a variety of languages, TumbleBooks and Bookflix for children and more.
The Thursday midday movie on Nov. 13 is “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.” The 2008 film is based on a 1938 Winifred Watson novel. Oscar-winner Frances McDormand stars as Miss Pettigrew, whose inability to hold a job in London as a governess compromises her well being shortly before England’s entry in World War II. The movie is PG-13 and closed captioned.
The U.S. Air Force Colonial Brass gives a free concert on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. at the library. The ensemble of six professional musicians from the U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty will be playing a variety of music from classics to pop and Broadway to swing in the Community Meeting Room. Seating will be limited. Audiences are advised to arrive early.
Maine author Monica Wood will do a reading on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room. She is the critically acclaimed author of “When We Were the Kennedys,” which is her newest book, as well as “Ernie’s Ark” and “Any Bitter Thing.”
Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.
