Yard debris program to begin

The fall yard debris program will run from Oct. 28-Nov. 9. Properly bagged leaves and small amounts of branches will be collected curbside. All leaves must be in paper bags. In addition, during this time residents can drop off leaves and brush at the Public Services facility at 371 Saco St., from 7 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Following the two-week collection, the drop-off area will remain open for leaves and brush Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturdays, Nov. 16 and 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The book sale is Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 am-4 pm, with bestsellers, paperbacks, cookbooks, gardening books, picture books, chapter books, movies, audiobooks and more. It is Sponsored by Friends of Walker Memorial Library.

The Holiday Craft Event is Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 am.

Author Speaks: with Paul Doiron, is Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 pm, Doiron is the author of the Mike Bowditch Game Warden mysteries and the editor of Down East Magazine. The fourth book in the Mike Bowditch series, “Massacre Pond,” is out now. Books will be available for purchase and light refreshments will be served.

Paintings by Westbrook resident Rahim Faleh will be on view through Oct. 31.

Holiday Paper Caper Craft with Michele Fosnacht is Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 am. Make a gift box and card for the holiday season. Teens and adults welcome.

Book group meetings are Thursday, Oct. 3, 5:45 pm,

Wireless Wednesdays are weekly from 9-11 am. Computer classes Saturdays, 10 am-noon, include Oct. 12: “Search It! Use Google Like a Pro” and Oct. 26, “Facebook for Seniors.”

A Friends of Walker Memorial Library meeting is Thursday, Oct. 24 from 5:30-6:30 pm.People interested in helping out with the bicentennial projects/ideas for Westbrook are especially encouraged to attend.

Story Times are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30. There will be no story time on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Baby Lapsits are Wednesdays at 10:30.

The weekly Homeschool Group meets Fridays from 11 am-1 pm. For those interested in homeschooling, bring a bag lunch and discuss curriculum and any other issue you might have, or just enjoy conversation with other home-schoolers. Children are welcome.

Free Beginner Vinyasa Yoga will be offered Saturdays from 9:30-10:30. The free class dates are Oct. 5, 19, Nov. 2, 9, 16, Dec. 7 and 21. Vinyasa Yoga will help to increase flexibility, build strength, bring a sense of calmness to a busy mind, and provide restorative relaxation. Instructor is Shannon Dow.

Ballroom dance classes will be at two different levels, beginner Fridays, Oct. 4-Nov. 8 (six weeks) 6-7 pm; and advanced beginner, Fridays, Oct. 4-Nov. 8 (six weeks), 7-8pm. Wiggle & Grow Kindermusik for children 18 months-31?2 years, instructed by Kristen Smith, runs Fridays, Oct. 18, 25, and Nov. 1, 8, 9-10 am. Fee: $58.

Brio Dance Studio and the Westbrook Community Center will present “Not-So-Spooky Parents’ Night Out,” a night of Halloween- and autumn-themed dancing, crafting and games, with dinner provided by the Westbrook Community Center’s Starlight Cafe? and Culinary Center. Open to children ages 4-7, the event, Saturday, Oct. 19, from 5-9 p.m., will costs $40 per child, which includes dinner and a $10 voucher good for any other program at the Westbrook Community Center. Registration for the Youth Basketball Game-Play Leagues is now open. There are two age groups – grades 1-3 and 4-6, and separate leagues for boys and girls. Player evaluations will be held in mid-November. The season will run through March 19.

Election information

The general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Voting locations are:

Ward 1 – Fred C. Wescott Community Building, 426 Bridge St.

Wards 2, 3, 4 – Westbrook Armory, 120 Stroudwater St.

Ward 5 – Prides Corner Congregational Church, 235 Pride St.

Residents can register to vote at the City Clerk’s Office prior to Election Day or at your voting location on Election Day.

Anyone wishing to vote by absentee ballot can do so by doing one of the following:

1. Coming into the City Clerk’s Office beginning Oct. 7

2. Calling 591-8131 to have a ballot mailed to you

3. Have an immediate family member pick one up for you

4. Requesting one online (visit our website for more information: www.westbrookmaine.com)

The deadline for requesting a regular absentee ballot will be Thursday, Oct. 31st at 5 p.m.

Ballots must be received back in the Clerk’s Office by 8 p.m. on Nov. 5.

The Clerk’s Office will be open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, for absentee voting and voter registration. Those with questions can call 591-8131.
