SOUTH PORTLAND – The South Portland Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Rotary Club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth, are hosting the third annual WinterFest on Friday, Feb. 6, and Saturday, Feb. 7. All events are free and open to the public.
The festival will kick off at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 with a block party and luminary walk in Knightville. Many Knightville businesses will also be open late and will provide in-store specials or sidewalk activities.
At Mill Creek Park, 6:30-8:30 p.m., there will also be musical entertainment and an ice carving demonstration. In addition, a skating party, a glow-in-the-dark, chuck-a-puck contest and a chicken wing-eating contest will take place. Bring your own skates and enjoy skating on the pond.
Saturday’s events will begin with a pancake breakfast at the South Portland Community Center, 7:30-10 a.m. Sponsored by the Cape Elizabeth Lions, tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under and $20 for families.
The South Portland High School Hockey Boosters will also once again host a Chili and Chowder Challenge at the Wainwright Fields Complex, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Come and try the creations of some of South Portland’s finest cooks, get warmed up and support the local hockey team.
Other events planned for Saturday include a snow sculpture contest, an ice hockey clinic, wagon rides, turkey bowling, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, ice sculpture demonstrations and a pond hockey tournament. There will also be an open family skate from 2-4 p.m., and food trucks will be on hand to provide refreshment.
