Balloons and cake are commonly used to congratulate a job well done, but rarely are they delivered by a singing pink gorilla.
Before employees at the Hannaford supermarket in Scarborough surprised Jason Hilton, their store manager, office manager Debbie Presby eagerly anticipated the gorilla’s arrival.
“He’s going to kill us,” she joked about embarrassing Hilton.
For the second year in a row, Hilton was awarded Hannaford’s Store Manager of the Year for both the district and the company as a whole.
Last Friday, just after 9 a.m., an announcement was made over the store’s intercom for employees to gather in the produce section. As the singing gorilla approached Hilton, the employees gathered around their boss while he was serenaded. After the song, Hilton was presented with a cake with his picture on it.
Though the event was in honor of Hilton, he took the opportunity to thank all the Hannaford employees, noting that the award given to him was really an honor for the whole store.
“You should walk away from here feeling good about yourselves,” he told his employees.
But Hilton’s generosity didn’t stop at employees of the store.
“You can take a banana on your way out,” he told the gorilla.
