After undergoing open-heart surgery, Cape Elizabeth School Superintendent Alan Hawkins is at home and doing well.

“He came through with flying colors,” his wife, Margaret, said of the surgery, which was performed on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Hawkins was out of the hospital and back at his South Portland home by the following weekend. After battling a bout of the flu, Hawkins is gaining strength and on his way to full recovery.

Though Hawkins is still resting for most of the day, in a few weeks, he expects to start working from home. Margaret Hawkins, principal of the Brown School in South Portland, has been keeping in touch with close friends, family and board members through e-mail updates on her husband’s recovery.

The superintendent expects to return to school within six to eight weeks.

According to his wife, he is “eager to get back.”
