Gorham High School was evacuated at 9 a.m. Thursday because of a gas leak in the heating system.

Dennis Libby, chairman of the Gorham School Board, described it as “a very small gas leak.” Some had escaped into the school through air intakes. Libby said students and staff were evacuated safely.

“No one was injured,” Libby said. “The problem has been fixed.”

Libby said students boarded school buses at the Shaw gym in the nearby Gorham Municipal Center. Gorham firefighters and police responded to the incident along with utility workers.

Gorham superintendent Ted Sharp said the decision to evacuate, which he called a precautionary measure, was made at 8:45 a.m. “It was a great oportunity to see if our crisis plan works the way we expected it to and it did,” said Sharp, grading the evacuation with an A-.

A voice message at the high school said school would resume Friday.
