A recount in the State Senate District 15 race changed slightly the vote totals but not the outcome as Democratic challenger Deborah Simpson of Auburn beat incumbent Republican Lois Snowe-Mello.
Also, Rep. Michael Vaughn, R-Durham, has withdrawn his request for a recount in the House District 105 race against Democratic challenger David Van Wie of New Gloucester.
The recount in the State Senate District 15 race, held last week in Augusta, found Simpson the winner by a tally of 10,058-9,954. Unofficial preliminary results from election night indicated Simpson had prevailed 10,019-9,917. District 15 includes Auburn, Durham, Poland and New Gloucester.
Simpson is finishing her fourth term in the state House of Representatives, where she was a two-term chairwoman for the House Judiciary Committee, and serves on the National Conference of State Legislators Executive Committee. During the election, she expressed a desire to work on tax reform and small business growth, including broadening the sales tax to push more of the tax burden to non-residents and tourists.
Preliminary results in the House District 105 race indicated challenger Van Wie was the winner over the incumbent Vaughan, 2,797-2,712. District 105 encompasses New Gloucester, Durham and part of Lisbon.
Van Wie, the former head of the state Bureau of Land & Water Quality and an active community volunteer, ran on a platform of developing renewable energy resources and reducing the cost of government through efficiency.
