The rematch didn’t go so well for the Cape Elizabeth softball team.
On Memorial Day, the Capers hosted Fryeburg Academy and snapped the Raiders’ 23-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory. On Saturday, the Raiders got their revenge, ending the Capers’ season with a 7-1 loss in the Class B semifinals.
Fryeburg got to Cape pitcher Tricia Thibodeau early as Fryeburg pitcher Hannah Hill led off the game with a sharp single and then followed that up with a stolen base. After Thibodeau got two quick strikeouts, the Raiders’ Ariel McConkey grounded one right to Thibodeau. Unfortunately, Thibodeau’s throw to first baseman Delaney Rockwell went wild, allowing Hill to score.
Hill kept the Capers off the basepaths for much of the game, allowing just two walks through the first five innings and striking out seven (she finished with 11 in the game). Cape catcher Colleen Martin broke up Hill’s no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth with a single to left.
The Raiders got to Thibodeau again in the third as Heather Tripp and McConkey both came up with RBI singles to give Fryeburg a 3-0 lead. Fryeburg tacked on four more in the fourth to put the game away.
Cape finally got to Hill in the bottom of the seventh as Gabe Donahue got a one-out single and took second on a wild pitch. Abby Flynn followed her with a walk and Grace Stack loaded the bases with a two-out walk. Morgan Mancall got Cape’s only RBI of the contest when she worked a bases-loaded walk to force Donahue home, but that was all the Capers would get as Hill got Emily Richardson to fly out to end the game.
Fryeburg advanced to the Class A West title game where they were scheduled to take on Gray-New Gloucester on Wednesday (after the Current’s deadline).
