SMCC gets ?fire grant
Southern Maine Community College in South Portland will receive a grant in the amount of $286,368, according to U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. The money is being allocated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grants Program.
The Fire Prevention & Safety Program supports projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards.
Basic computer training available
Portland Public Library will host a basic computer training workshop Thursday, Aug. 23, 10 a.m.-noon. Registration is required.
The workshop will be led by Raminta Moore, library technical aid. This program is available to those who speak English or French. The class will cover topics such as what you see on the screen, components of a computer, mousing exercises, how to scroll, and how to search the web.
Additionally, one-on-one workshops will be offered on Wednesdays 5-6:30 p.m. and Fridays 1-2 p.m. afternoons by appointment only. Facebook training sessions are also available between 2-3 p.m. on Tuesdays.
There is limited space available for each of these trainings and participants must register in advance at the library’s public computing desk or by calling 871-1700, ext. 708.
Cape garden club to meet
The Cape Elizabeth Garden Club will meet at the Shore Road home of Sandy Keenan on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
Club members care for the gardens at the Fort Williams lighthouse and at the Thomas Memorial Library. They have also published a cookbook which is for sale at the lighrhouse store and at other bookstores.
