This year’s 1th annual Breakaway 5K road race and the Marilyn Golzbein Memorial Fun Run are scheduled for this Saturday in Old Orchard Beach.

Race Director Louis Ladakakos announced Monday that this year’s 5K race is being dedicated to the memory of James L. and Maxine Paul Pouravelis, who both died this year.

The Pouravelis were husband and wife as well as local business people and community leaders.

James Pouravelis for many years operated “The Spot” and “Jimmy’s Parking Lot” on the Beach and West Grand Avenue. He served as a member of the board of directors of the Local Chamber of Commerce for several years.

His wife, Maxine, an attorney, owned and operated the Ocean House Hotel and Motel, was a community leader and served on several boards in various capacities. She was also a corporator of the Saco- Biddeford Savings Intitution. They both were very active in the support of the race since its inception, said Ladakakos.

All net proceeds from the race benefit the MAPS Scholarship Foundation of Old Orchard Beach which awards a scholarship each year to graduating student from Old Orchard Beach High School.

There will be several gift certificates given to runners donated by local businesses. A cash award will be given to anyone breaking the course record for men and women.

The race begins on East Grand Avenue near the town square and continues to Ocean Park and then back to the Square. The course is accredited by the U.S. Track and Field Association, and begins at 8 a.m.

At 9 a.m. there will be a one mile “Fun Run” for the kids. Kids 12 and under pay $7 and enjoy a fun-filled day at the Beach with free ice cream, pizza, pier fries, rides at Palace Playland and a medal for running the race.

The MAPS Foundation is named after four dedicated educators from Old Orchard Beach; Jerome A. LePelletier and the late E. Emerson Cummings, Herbert R. Bean and John McSweeney. Bean and LePelletier are both former High School Principals. Cummings is a former math teacher and councilman. McSweeney is a former coach, teacher and athletic director.

The race is open to anyone, from anywhere. Previous years’ races have drawn as many as 450-500 runners.
