A severe thunderstorm rolled through Southern Maine around 9 p.m. Friday bringing heavy winds, rain and lightning that resulted in power outages across the region.
Most heavily affected were Portland, coastal islands and the Gorham area, according to Central Maine Power spokeswoman Gail Rice. In Gorham, a tree felled by heavy winds on Fort Hill Road cut power for about half an hour. Over 1,000 customers in Gorham and Buxton were left in the dark between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., said Rice.
In Westbrook, lightning struck a home on Bridgton Road requiring the help of Westbrook Fire and Rescue. The lightning struck the Ptashka residence at 942 Bridgton Road around 9 p.m. Friday. It entered the basement and charred some of the wood of the building, said Westbrook Fire acting Capt. James Rogers Saturday morning.
Rogers said the house was not on fire when firefighters arrived, but wood was smoldering and filling the home with smoke. Westbrook firefighters ventilated the home until about 10:30 p.m., he said, and the home had only minor damage from the lightning strike.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for today for most of the region. In the Portland area, the weather is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 50 and winds of 20 to 24 miles per hour as well as gusts approaching 50 miles per hour.
