The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is looking for any information that will lead to the arrest of whoever dumped a large collection of tires in Standish this week.
According to Deputy Paul Pettengill sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning about 150 tires were left beside the road, which will cost the town about $600 to clean up.
Pettengill said most of the tires were on Job Road, around 50 were on Manchester Road and a few scattered tires were between the Dow and Cape roads.
He said there are no leads, but the volume of tires points to an automotive professional.
“I would have to say it would be a garage or salvage yard or a tire distributor,” said Pettengill. He said some of the tires had chalk marks around punctures, as if they had been serviced.
Pettengill said it will cost the town of Standish $90 to haul the tires away, with an additional $126 for labor from the public works employees. In addition, it will cost between $350 and $400 to put the tires in a landfill.
Pettengill said there were more tires at Dow Road, but someone took them before the public works crew arrived.
“If someone wants to dispose of them, that’s great,” Pettengil said. “Less money the taxpayers have to pay.”
Pettengill said anyone who saw a large vehicle unloading tires in the area on Monday night should call the sheriff’s office at 774-1444.
“If someone’s dumping 50 tires in one spot, it took them some time to do that. I’m hoping someone saw something,” said Pettingill. “I’m hoping we can come up with something so Standish doesn’t get stuck with the bill.”
