Mike McCullum, who left the business world two years ago to become Portland High’s athletic/activities director, is returning to his former job.

McCullum, 36, submitted his resignation last week. His last day at Portland High is Sept. 15. McCullum will help with the transition to the new athletic director.

McCullum will return to Rich Exterior Solutions, a Portland home improvement company, where he worked for 10 years before becoming athletic director.

“I have no official title, but I will be in sales looking to build on the residential exterior and renovation business,” said McCullum.

“My decision really came down to the best interests of my family. We have two girls, ages 4 and 1. This will give me a little more flexibility to help my wife and be more a part of their lives. Portland High has been a great place for me. I was a student-athlete there. I coached there for 10 years with two years as a head coach. Being the athletic director really opened my eyes to all the programs at the school and their needs.”

McCullum was named the Bulldogs’ AD in July 2010. He was the head baseball coach at the time.

Long hours are common for an athletic director.

“I’m in the office by 8 in the morning, and on most days, don’t leave the Portland Expo, the Portland Ice Arena or Fitzpatrick Stadium until 8 or 9 at night. I enjoyed every minute of the job. With two little girls at home, it made sense for me not to be out as late at night,” said McCullum.

McCullum cited his work in helping consolidate boosters at Portland and Deering as a highlight. Instead of booster groups for each sport and co-curricular activities, as was the custom, both schools now have one booster organization where all sports and activities reap the benefits of fundraising and where there’s better financial accountability.

“We’ve grown in that area,” he said.

McCullum said he won’t be a stranger at Portland High sporting events.

“I’m a Portland High fan first,” he said. “I’ll still be going to the games. I’ve built up a lot of good relationships over the last two years.”
