BRUNSWICK — Allen M. Brother, 79, died unexpectedly Feb. 26, while on a walk with friends.
He was born April 27, 1936, in Bronx, New York, to Ruth (Shapiro) and Morris Brother. He attended local schools and, after high school, attended City College of New York.
Brother served in the Army for two years in Munich, Germany and then returned to the U.S. to complete his studies in chemistry. Following his graduation he moved to New Jersey and worked in the field of medical technology research.
Brother moved to the Washington, D.C., suburb of Bowie, Maryland, where he worked for over 35 years, first in the marketing of medical equipment and later in marketing technology to the federal government. In 1992, he married Arleen (McDonald) Quackenbush and moved to Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
The couple made annual vacation trips to Maine, fell in love with Brunswick, and began planning their eventual retirement. In 2010 they moved to Brunswick full time and found it to be all they had hoped for.
At the time of his death Brother was enjoying beautiful weather, and living his dream of retirement in Maine, which he loved more each day.
Brother is survived by his wife, of Brunswick; a son, Gary Brother, of Bowie, Maryland; a daughter, Doris Brother, of Cheverly, Maryland; a sister, Lois Weldon, of Queens, New York; and two stepsons, Mark Quackenbush, of Alexandria, Virigina, and Steven Quackenbush of Poolesville, Maryland.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m., April 23, at Midcoast Presbyterian Church, 84 Main St., Topsham.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be mailed to Merrymeeting Dog Park, c/o Brunswick Parks and Recreation Department, 220 Neptune Dr., Brunswick, ME 04011.
