ARROWSIC — Willard G. “Will” Simmons, 85, of Arrowsic Road, died Dec. 20 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born in Rockland on Sept. 14, 1923, a son of Lewis and Jennie (Turner) Simmons.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ingersol, which was a Bath-built ship.
Following the war, he worked as a lobsterman and in a shoe factory.
On June 23, 1962, he married Connie L. Hoer in Bath.
For 30 years he worked for Bath Iron Works as a welder, retiring in 1988.
After retirement, he received his recreational license in flying.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed building radio-controlled planes and boats. He was a member of Smith-Tobey American Legion Post of Bath.
He was very proud of finally earning his high school diploma at the age of 74.
He is predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife Connie of 46 years; his first wife Dorothy Nichols; a son, Willard H. Simmons and his wife Jane of North Pole, Alaska; two daughters, Sharon Clark and her husband Bruce of Greene and Cindy Mendieta of Houston; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Burial will take place in the spring at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Arrangements are by David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, Bath.
