Lynx tie WNBA finals series 1-1 by upending Fever, 83-71

Seimone Augustus scored 23 of her 27 points in the second half to help the host Minnesota Lynx surge past the Indiana Fever 83-71 on Wednesday night to even the WNBA finals at one game apiece.

Maya Moore pitched in 23 points and the defending champion Lynx forced the Fever into 24 turnovers, 15 after halftime. Tamika Catchings led the way as usual with 27 points and eight rebounds, but the Fever’s defense faded after a dominant start. They let the Lynx score 29 points in the third quarter and bring an already-loud crowd into the game even more.

The series moves to Indiana. Game 3 is on Friday.

• Connecticut’s Tina Charles was the leading vote-getter for the All-WNBA team, and Indiana’s Catchings earned her seventh first-team selection.

Joining Charles and Catchings on the first team were the Los Angeles Sparks’ Candace Parker, New York’s Cappie Pondexter and Minnesota’s Augustus.

NBA: Minnesota’s Kevin Love, a two-time All-Star, broke his right hand in a morning workout and will miss 6 to 8 weeks.

Love broke the third and fourth metacarpals on his shooting hand in a workout before practice. It’s a crushing blow to the Timberwolves, who already will be without star point guard Ricky Rubio for what is expected to be at least the first six weeks of the regular season while he recovers from a torn ACL in his left knee.

TENNIS

ERSTE BANK OPEN: Top-seeded Juan Martin del Potro beat Daniel Brands of Germany 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) at Vienna in his first match since being sidelined a month by a right wrist injury.

KREMLIN CUP: Caroline Wozniacki, seeded third, advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Urszula Radwanska of Poland, 6-1, 6-3.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s sister said her brother could be back racing next week at Martinsville Speedway.

Earnhardt will miss his second consecutive race Sunday at Kansas because of two concussions suffered in a six-week span.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Kara Fischer scored four goals for Hyde in a 7-1 victory over Carrabassett Valley Academy,at Carrabassett Valley. Olivia Griffing, Carolyn Moore and Julia Jackson also scored for the Phoenix.

BOYS’ SOCCER: John Cross put the ball just inside the left post in the 68th minute to give Phillips Exeter Academy a 1-0 win over Berwick Academy at Exeter, N.H.

Berwick goalie Erik Wisniewski fended off 18 scoring attempts by Exeter (9-1). Curtis Arsenault posted the shutout with one stop. Berwick drops to 5-5-2 overall, 3-2-2 in the Eastern Independent League.

• Wilson MacMillan scored twice in the first half and Kiefer Cundy added a pair of goals in the second to lead Hyde over Dublin 4-2 at Exeter, N.H. Dublin tied the game in the first half, scoring on a direct kick and a penalty kick.
