PORTLAND — A scholarship named after former South African President Nelson Mandela is in the works, according to a news release from Portland Public Schools.
The money will be raised by the Portland Regional Chamber to support $500 scholarships beginning next June for one student from each of the city’s high schools: Casco Bay High School, Deering High School and Portland High School.
The announcement was made by Mayor Michael Brennan during a memorial vigil for Mandela at Monument Square. Mandela died Dec. 5 at age 95.
