A private Brunswick music teacher has been arrested on six counts of unlawful sexual contact with one of his students, his lawyer confirmed Saturday.
Joshua King, 31, of Wiscasset, was arrested Jan. 3 by Brunswick police for allegedly having unlawful sexual contact with a student at the Brunswick Music Center in the Tontine Mall in downtown Brunswick, according to his attorney, Michael Turndorf of Portland.
King plans to plead not guilty, and has not been indicted by the Cumberland County grand jury, Turndorf said.
King was released on cash bail from the Cumberland County Jail and is living with his family in Wiscasset under the terms of his release, according to the attorney.
“He had a lot of students and was well respected,” Turndorf said.
The owner of the Brunswick Music Center, Jerry Perron, said Saturday he sent out letters to students and their families on Jan. 9 informing them of the arrest. He said King’s contract with the music center has been discontinued and he is no longer teaching there.
Perron said King taught a variety of instruments for the past couple of years.
Brunswick police did not release any information about the arrest Saturday and referred questions to the department’s detectives, who were not available.
