NEW GLOUCESTER — Firefighters from six towns fought a barn fire Thursday night at the New Gloucester Fairgrounds on Bald Hill Road.

Capt. Scotty Doyle said the fire caused about $20,000 to the structure, which is used to store recreational equipment. Doyle said crews were able to save the building and the contents that had been kept inside.

The cause of the fire, which originated near a portable toilet that was next to the barn, remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office. It was reported at 7:20 p.m.

The 31-acre fairgrounds property, which was once used for horse racing, is presently used for running and hiking. The property also features a half-mile dirt track.
