Incumbent Rep. Rachel Talbot Ross has won the Democratic primary in Portland’s House District 40.
Talbot Ross faced a challenge from former Rep. Herb Adams. She got 810 votes, just over 75 percent. Adams got 260 votes, just under 24 percent.
No Republican or unenrolled candidate has filed to run in the general election this year, so the primary winner has a clear path to the seat.
The two candidates were outside the Portland Exposition Building on Tuesday afternoon greeting people at the polls, where traffic had been steady all day.
“There was always a steady stream,” said Susan Maataoui, an election warden. “The numbers aren’t necessarily equivalent to a November election, but it will be pretty good.”
Adams held the seat from 2002 until 2010, when he had to step down because of term limits. He ran again in 2012 and 2014, but lost both years to Democrat Ben Chipman, who is now in the state Senate. Talbot Ross defeated Adams and Anna Kellar in the party’s primary in 2016.
The district encompasses the western half of the city’s peninsula and part of the Oakdale neighborhood.
