PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Giovanna Bonilla beat the throw to the plate as Ari Bilotta hit a two-out walk-off RBI single to right field, giving UMass-Boston a 6-5 win over the University of Southern Maine in the second round of the Little East Conference softball tournament on Friday.
The loss eliminated the third-seeded Huskies (21-20).
The Huskies forced extra innings with a run in the top of the seventh. Courtney Davis drew her fourth walk of the game and later scored on a groundout.
MAINE SPLITS WITH STONY BROOK: Erika Leonard lined a triple to drive in two runs to highlight a four-run top of the fifth as Maine (20-22, 9-6) defeated Stony Brook (22-20, 9-7) 4-1 in the nightcap to salvage a split in an America East doubleheader at Stony Brook, New York.
Stony Brook won the opener 7-1.
AMHERST 9, BATES 0: Audrey Hansen’s grand slam highlighted a five-inning quarterfinal win for the Mammoths (27-5) over the Bobcats (20-14) at Amherst, Massachusetts.
BASEBALL
EASTERN CONNECTICUT SWEEPS SOUTHERN MAINE: Jordan Muchin pitched an eight-hit, no-walk performance for a 2-0 Eastern Connecticut shutout of the Huskies in the first game of a Little East doubleheader in Gorham.
The Warriors completed the sweep with two runs in the top of the ninth for a 7-5 win in the second game to move past USM and into second place in the final LEC standings.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
UMAINE: Stephane Ingo was announced as the newest member of the 2018 recruiting class.
Ingo, who is from Mississauga, Ontario, spent last year playing at Gould Academy in Bethel, where he averaged 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game.
