BOSTON — St. Joseph’s opened the GNAC softball tournament with a win and a loss on Wednesday.

The Monks defeated fifth-seeded Albertus Magnus 7-3 before losing to top-seeded Suffolk 2-1.

Delaney Sylvester hit a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth inning to give Suffolk the win.

Kaylee Burns singled home a run in the top of the ninth for the Monks. Libby Pomerleau had three hits and Madisyn Charest had two.

Maizie Lee hit a three-run homer and Burns added a two-run shot for the Monks against Albertus Magnus.

The fourth-seeded Monks will play an elimination game against third-seeded Simmons at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Boston.

WESTERN CONN. 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Charline Plasczynski was 2 for 3 with two RBI and Erica Bower drove in two runs on an RBI triple as the fourth-seeded Colonials (16-22-1) defeated the third-seeded Huskies (21-19) in the Little East tournament at Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Taylor Lux was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for USM.

The Huskies will play in an elimination game against sixth-seeded UMass-Boston at 10 a.m. Friday.

BASEBALL

JOHNSON & WALES 9, ST. JOSEPH’S 5: Colby Greenhalgh had three hits with three RBI as the third-seeded Wildcats (24-16) defeated the second-seeded Monks (27-12) in a GNAC tournament second-round game at Standish.

The Monks scored all of their runs in the ninth on a three-run homer by Noah McDaniel, a solo homer by Greg Emanuelson and a bases-loaded walk by Will Martin.

St. Joseph’s, which is hosting the semifinal and championship rounds, will play in an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 9, CENTRAL MAINE CC 1: The SeaWolves (29-12-1) built a 7-0 in the first two innings and went on to beat the Mustangs (14-21) in the Yankee Small College Conference tournament championship game at Old Orchard Beach.

The SeaWolves scored four in the first on a two-run homer by Sean Adams, an RBI triple by Evan Leveroni and run-scoring single by Nathaniel Cyr.

Cyr also had a two-run double in the second and the SeaWolves got their other run on a passed ball.

The SeaWolves added two in the fourth on a double by Timothy Greenlaw and a single by Leveroni.

Dylan Francoeur pitched a six-hitter with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Mustangs scored a run in the sixth on an error.

Greenlaw finished 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI, Amos Herrin had three hits and scored three runs, and Leveroni and Cyr each had two hits and combined for five RBI.

Southern Maine CC beat Great Bay CC 5-0 in a semifinal game earlier in the evening.

MEN’S LACROSSE

EASTERN CONN. 10, SOUTHERN MAINE 9: Harrison Urda scored six goals and Connor Wyllie scored the winner with 1:25 remaining as the Warriors (10-6) rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Huskies (8-9) in the Little East tournament semifinals at Mansfield, Connecticut.

FOOTBALL

UMAINE: The Black Bears moved their annual spring football final scrimmage to Friday afternoon because of the threat of lightning in the forecast for Friday night.

The 14th annual Jeff Cole Memorial Spring Game will be held at 4:30 p.m. at Alfond Stadium. It was originally scheduled for 7.

Maine is coming off a 4-6 season. Coach Joe Harasymiak is in his third season.
