Windham schools were closed Friday after a bomb threat prompted the evacuation of Windham High School on Thursday afternoon.
The bomb threat was found written on a bathroom wall after students were dismissed for the day Thursday, Windham police said. The high school, middle school and primary school in Windham all were closed, but other RSU 14 schools were open.
Superintendent Sanford Prince wrote on Twitter that Windham High School was evacuated after a bomb threat at 2:30 p.m. Maine State Police K-9 units did a sweep of the school and police searched the building, but found nothing suspicious. The school was reopened for evening activities, he said.
However, he wrote in a letter to the community Friday, the source of the threat had not been found and the threat itself was specific to Friday.
“A number of people worked into the night last night trying to determine the approximate time that the message was written and who possibly could have written it. It was our hope that we would have been able to determine who had written the message so school would have been opened today,” he wrote.
The message written on the bathroom wall was specific to the high school, Prince said. He did not reveal what the threat said because of the ongoing criminal investigation.
Students posted photos of the threat on social media before school officials were notified, he wrote. He urged students to come forward with any information that might help police.
Prince also wrote that counselors will be available when school reopens next week to help students who may feel anxious about returning.
