The Americans won gold in the team sprint Wednesday at the PyeongChang Games. It is just the second Olympic cross-country medal won by an American. Bill Koch was the first, at the 1976 Olympics.
Jessie Diggins, 27, and Kikkan Randall, 35, won gold in this event at the world championships in 2013, the first Americans to do so.

Diggins, ranked third in the world, also has three fifth-place finishes and one sixth in PyeongChang. She won two medals — a silver and a bronze — at the 2017 world championships. Randall, competing in her fifth Olympics, was on the 4×5-kilometer relay team that finished fifth.
While cross-country has been on the Winter Olympic program since the inaugural Games in 1924 in Chamonix, France, women’s events weren’t added until 1952.
