SOUTH PORTLAND — Longtime City Councilor Linda Cohen will serve as mayor in 2018.

Fellow councilors elected her Monday night to a position she held once before, in 2015, two years into her first term on the council. This is the final year of her second three-year term representing District 4.

A former city clerk here and in Portland, Cohen said she was honored to be nominated by her peers and looks forward leading the community she loves in the year ahead.

A largely administrative and ceremonial position, the mayor of Maine’s fourth-largest city steers the council’s agenda, runs council meetings and represents the city as a spokesman and dignitary at public events.
