Yard Goats use big inning to defeat Sea Dogs, 8-5
The Hartford Yard Goats scored five runs in the fifth inning Tuesday night to break a tie and went on to an 8-5 victory against the visiting Portland Sea Dogs.
Ryan Metzler and Juan Ciracio each recorded three RBI for Hartford (61-73).
Mike Olt had three RBI for Portland (62-72) and hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Barnes, who is on assignment with the Sea Dogs, started and pitched one scoreless inning. Barnes allowed one hit and one walk with a strikeout.
BASKETBALL
COLLEGE: Lute Olsen, the former Arizona coach, will be honored with a statue on campus.
Athletic Director Dave Heeke said the project will cost about $300,000 and construction is scheduled to be completed next March.
• Keeshawn Davenport, the University of New Orleans’ women’s basketball coach signed a new deal, keeping her with the Privateers through the 2020-21 season.
NBA: The Portland Trail Blazers agreed to a multiyear contract extension with their president of basketball operations, Neil Olshey.
The team didn’t disclose terms of the deal, which runs through the 2020-21 season.
AUTO RACING
NASCAR: Chase Elliott will drive his father’s iconic No. 9 next season in a number swap at Hendrick Motorsports.
William Byron will take the No. 24 made famous by Jeff Gordon. The No. 5 will not be fielded for the first time since 1984. It was Hendrick’s original car number and Terry Labonte drove that number in his 1996 championship season.
SOCCER
MLS: The LA Galaxy hired former San Jose coach Dominic Kinnear as an assistant to Sigi Schmid.
Kinnear is one of the four head coaches in league history to win multiple MLS Cup titles, leading the Houston Dynamo to championships in 2006 and 2007.
WORLD CUP: Saudi Arabia’s hopes of automatic qualification for the 2018 tournament were hit by a 2-1 loss to the United Arab Emirates at Al Ain, United Aran Emirates in Asian Group B.
CYCLING
SPANISH VUELTA: Chris Froome kept his lead by avoiding trouble in the difficult final descent of Stage 10, which was won by Matteo Trentin.
It was the second stage victory for the Italian, who outsprinted Spaniard Jose Joaquin Rojas at the end of the 102.4-mile ride from Caravaca de la Cruz to Alhama de Murcia in southeastern Spain.
HOCKEY
NHL: A slimmer, trimmer-looking Alex Ovechkin is back on the ice for summer workouts more than two weeks before the start of training camp.
Ovechkin skated in an informal practice with Washington Capitals teammates and looked lighter than his playing weight of 239 pounds last season. General Manager Brian MacLellan had urged Ovechkin to train differently and add more speed.
FIELD HOCKEY
COLLEGE: The University of Maine took a seven-goal lead into halftime and went on to defeat Bryant 12-1 at Orono.
Libby Reidl scored three goals to lead Maine (2-1). Emily Corbett recorded one save as the Black Bears allowed only two shots on goal.
Victoria Newbill, a former Mt. Blue High player, scored for Bryant.
