PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Police in New Hampshire say a man who was driving distractedly caused a gas station fire after crashing into a pump.
The Portsmouth Herald reported that police and firefighters responded to an emergency call from a Portsmouth gas station around 7:50 p.m. Sunday. Police say a Portsmouth man driving along U.S. Route 1 Bypass struck two medians, a gas pump, a parked car and then a stairway before coming to a stop.
The damaged gas pump burst into flames but was quickly put out by firefighters.
Police Chief Robert Merner says the driver was using a phone during the crash. The motorist was cited for using an electronic device while driving.
Police believe speed was also a factor in the crash.
