A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to eight years in jail for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Melson Jacques, 35, of Braintree, Massachusetts, was also sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Jon D. Levy to three years of supervised release on the charge. Jacques had pleaded guilty in March.

According to court records, Jacques persuaded a drug-addicted Biddeford man in May 2015 to buy a Glock 9mm handgun for him and a drug-dealing accomplice. The purchase was monitored by federal agents who knew that Jacques was barred from having firearms because of multiple felony drug convictions in Massachusetts.

At the time, Jacques was also a fugitive wanted in Massachusetts, where he had fled from a drug trafficking trial.

Levy told Jacques that his criminal history reflected “disregard for the law.”
