Villanueva, Barfield help Sea Dogs split doubleheader at New Hampshire

Elih Villanueva pitched six scoreless innings and Jeremy Barfield hit a two-run single as the Portland Sea Dogs beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The Fisher Cats won the second game, 3-2.

Villanueva (3-3) allowed two hits, walked three and struck out four. Williams Jerez allowed a run in the seventh but struck out Matt Dean to end the game and earn his fourth save.

Barfield drove in Danny Mars and Josh Tobias in the fourth inning.

GOLD CUP: Matt Miazga scored on a close-range header from Graham Zusi’s free kick in the 88th minute, giving the United States first place in its CONCACAF Gold Cup group with a 3-0 victory over Nicaragua in Cleveland.

Panama’s 3-0 win over Martinique meant the U.S. needed a three-goal victory to win the group. Joe Corona scored his first international goal in four years in the 37th minute and Kelyn Rowe doubled the lead in the 56th with his first international goal, but the U.S. squandered opportunities when Dom Dwyer and Corona took poor penalty kicks in the second half that easily were saved by Justo Lorente.

FOOTBALL

PATRIOTS: Babe Parilli, the former quarterback who starred in the team’s American Football League days, died Saturday. He was 87.

The cause of death wasn’t disclosed.

Parilli played for the Boston Patriots from 1961 to 1967. He was voted to three AFL All-Star games and was the AFL’s Comeback Player of the Year in 1966. He ranks fourth on the Patriots’ career passing list with 16,747 yards and is in the team’s Hall of Fame.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Bruins signed goaltenders Zane McIntyre and Malcolm Subban to two-year, two-way contracts worth $650,000 at the NHL level.

BASKETBALL

NBA: A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the New Orleans Pelicans have agreed in principle on a one-year deal with Rajon Rondo.

The person said Rondo is expected to sign his contract next week and the terms are still being finalized.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: Fabio Aru was dropped in the last 500 meters of Stage 14, which was won by Michael Matthews, and relinquished the yellow jersey to Chris Froome.

Aru lost touch with the leaders in the final short, sharp ascent of the Cote de Saint Pierre in the town of Rodez and crossed the line 25 seconds behind Matthews, and now trails Froome by 18 seconds.

BOXING

GOLDEN GLOVES: Liz Leddy of Portland took a split decision from Jillian Bliss of New York to win gold in the elite lightweight division at the women’s National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Lindsay Francois of Gorham won a bronze in the elite light welterweight division.
