A fire killed multiple dogs and rabbits at an Arundel kennel late Tuesday night.

The fire at Superior Kennels on Irving Road was reported just before 11 p.m. and took about four hours to put out, said Arundel Fire Capt. Chris Aberle.

According to WCSH-TV, several animals had died but no people were injured.

Crews from seven fire departments responded to the fire, which required companies to truck water from over a mile away, Aberle said.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Superior Kennels is a state-licensed kennel that specializes in breeding small dogs, according to its website. It is connected to DuBois Livestock and Excavating, which also sells livestock, including pigs and bunnies.

Aberle said the kennel was two mobile home structures connected together. Some animals who ran off during the blaze returned Wednesday morning as firefighters were mopping up, Aberle said.

A person who was at the property declined to comment Wednesday afternoon.

In 2009, at least five dogs died at Superior Kennels when a fire started in one building and spread to another.
