Falmouth Memorial Library will host authors Kelly Braffet and Owen King at 6 p.m. Tuesday at 5 Lunt Road, Falmouth.

The library also invites the community to celebrate at its annual Holiday Revels from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, for an evening of music, stories and activities for the entire family.

Historian to tell of colonels

Historian Jerry Wiles will tell the story of two historic figures, in a talk set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas Memorial Library, 6 Scott Dyer Road.

Wiles will tell the story of the parallel lives of Maine’s Joshua Chamberlain and Alabama’s William Oates, two colonels who led infantry regiments at Little Round Top.

The program is free and open to the public.

Tech petting zoo to be held

York Public Library will offer an information session on digital tablets and eReaders at 1 p.m. Wednesday for those thinking about purchasing that software for the holidays.

Jared Leadbetter, from the Maine State Library, will demonstrate the following devices; Nook SimpleTouch, iPad Mini, Kindle Fire, Google Nexus, Nook HD+, and the Kindle Paper White.

All of those devices will be available to test out during this event as part of the Maine State Library’s “Technology Petting Zoo.”

Holiday events scheduled

The Brunswick Downtown Association has created a new series of holiday events, called “Holly Jolly Holidays.”

On Wednesday, a Lunch & Theatre-Lunch event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Inn at Brunswick Station followed by a chartered bus trip to The Footlights Theatre in Falmouth for a live performance of the musical “The Gift of the Magi.”

On Thursday, a Victorian tea and a performance of “A Christmas Carol” will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at First Parish Church in Brunswick. Winners of the Downtown Window Decorating Contest will be announced before the performance.

And, on Saturday, there will be a Downtown Holiday Shopping Day featuring free gift wrapping at Senter Place and carolers.

Emancipation talk set

Guest speaker Patrick Rael will present the talk “Warfare by Other Means: The Emancipation Policy During the Civil War” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the next installment of the Joshua L. Chamberlain Civil War Round Table Lecture at Curtis Memorial Library’s Morrell Room, 23 Pleasant St.

Student aid to be discussed

Information about the Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund will be discussed at a Town Matters program at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Thornton Oaks Retirement Community, 25 Thornton Way.

Board of director members representing the fund will discuss its history and mission, the types of aid provided and who is eligible for awards.

The fund offers post-secondary financial assistance for high school graduates living in Brunswick, Topsham, Harpswell, Bowdoin and Bowdoinham.

Awards are named in honor of individuals and groups who have provided endowment funds and other support.

The discussion will include the stories of some of these individuals, Emery Booker, Marion McKenney, George Senter, Malcolm Clarke, Mario Tonon and “Pinky” Bouchard.

Nature programs offered

Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park, at 426 Wolf Neck Road, will offer the following nature programs:

A Winter Plant Identification outing on Saturday, a Casco Bay Walk along a one-mile trail on Sunday, a talk on Maine’s last glaciation on Dec. 21 and the final program of the season, “Winter in the Woods,” a talk on plants and animals that live in Maine during winter.

Programs are for children and adults, all meeting at 2 p.m. at the circle of benches by second parking lot for an hour-long program.

Wellness, author talks set

Camden Public Library will host two talks this week at 55 Main St.

On Monday, Amy Jenner will present “Stress Relief: Ten Amazing Do-It-Yourself Acupressure Points” at noon. The talk is part of the Wellness series co-hosted by the library and the Pen Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce.

And, on Tuesday, illustrator Leslie Anderson and writers Laura Levenson and Claire Guyton present their new book, “Summer Stories: Stories by Ten Maine Writers,” at 7 p.m.

Holiday events scheduled

Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Centers will host a number of holiday programs over the next few weeks at 521 Main St.

A Holiday Brunch will be served at 11 a.m. Thursday (reservation deadline is Monday) for $6 per person for those who bring a handcrafted ornament for the Center’s Meals on Wheels ornament tree.

Join Maine Master Naturalist volunteer Kit Pfeiffer at 10 a.m. Monday for a talk about “Maine’s Birdfeeder Birds.”

A sea glass workshop, with Lynne Thompson, will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Cost is $25.

A White Elephant sale will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

And a Beauty Looks Workshop will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, with Deborah Waldron sharing make-up tips. Fee is $5.

Shopping event for kids

Joyful Harvest will host its Annual Kids Shopping Event from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Second Congregational Church, at Crescent and Graham streets.

Every December, Joyful Harvest enlists volunteers and community support so that kids have the opportunity to pick out gifts for their loved ones, free of charge, to help learn the spirit of giving.

The event also provides a free breakfast to families that includes an appearance by Jolly Ole St. Nick.

This year, several workshops have been held to advance and support the event, including workshops to create gift bags.

Sessions to sort and prepare gift items and to set up the giftshop will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Donations of gently used or new items, that children can select for their parents, will be received through noon Monday.

Donations can be brought to Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center at 128 Main St.

‘Polar Express’ reading

All aboard for “The Polar Express!”

Jim Nawrocki, a real life conductor on Amtrak’s Downeaster train, will enchant children with a live reading of the holiday classic “The Polar Express” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Portland Public Library’s Sam L. Cohen Children Library at 5 Monument Square.

Dyer Library holiday events

The ninth annual Festival of Trees seasonal Christmas tree display continues at the Dyer Library and Saco Museum at 371 Main St.

A Children’s Crafts Day will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Deering Room at Dyer Library. Children can drop in anytime throughout the day to make a holiday craft.

Tea with Mrs. Claus will be served in the Deering Room on Saturday, with seating at noon and 1:30 p.m. The tea is open to ages 3 through 8. Reservations are required as space is limited.

A Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Visits with Santa Claus will be offered from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Saco Museum.

Extended hours are being observed during the festival, with the diplay viewable from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, from noon to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The facilities are closed on Mondays.
