Falmouth and Kennebunk will be joining the Southwestern Maine Activities Association, starting with the 2017-18 school year.

The league announced Thursday afternoon that it has accepted applications from both schools to join the SMAA. The SMAA will become an 18-team league, with Falmouth and Kennebunk added to all athletic schedules.

According to a three-paragraph press release, the additions made sense because “currently Falmouth and Kennebunk compete with SMAA schools in many sports as well as post-season MPA tournaments.”

Falmouth is a long-standing member of the Western Maine Conference. Kennebunk was an SMAA member from 2002 to 2013 before returning to the WMC.

Based on current enrollment figures from the Maine Principals’ Association, Falmouth and Kennebunk will be the two smallest public schools in the SMAA. Falmouth’s current enrollment is 710, Kennebunk’s is 673. Current enrollments for the other public SMAA schools range from 1,422 at Thornton Academy to 722 at Westbrook.

Two private schools – Cheverus (465 students) and the Maine Girls’ Academy (398) – are also SMAA members.
