In reference to the Jan. 2 letter to the editor by Walden S. Morton of Cape Elizabeth, “Flying flag upside down an exercise of free speech“:

I am a World War II veteran and military retiree, with 41-plus years active/Army National Guard/Army Reserve service.

I find it very disturbing in that what the letter writer defines as “free speech” is a “sign of distress or instances of extreme danger to life or property” as spelled out in Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1.

My feeling is that if you are going to fly the flag, fly it the right way or don’t fly it at all.
