The Journal Tribune, a newspaper that serves the Biddeford area, has discontinued its Monday edition.
Publisher Devin Hamilton told readers that the decision to eliminate the Monday print edition and instead offer readers an enhanced online edition was made to attract more digital and mobile-oriented readership.
“The sharp increase in online news through smartphones and social media has led to unprecedented demand for our digital content and led to this decision,” said Hamilton in a notice to readers printed in the paper’s Saturday edition. The paper will continue to print editions Tuesday through Sunday, he said.
The paper’s roots go back to 1845 when the Union was founded in Saco. A decade later, the Eastern Journal was started in Biddeford and the two papers combined, according to the Journal Tribune website.
In 1997, it was bought by Beacon Press Inc.
