Portland police are warning residents in the Deering and North Deering neighborhoods about a string of burglaries in those areas that could be connected.

Seven homes were burglarized between Oct. 8 and Oct. 15, police said. The break-ins occurred on Florida Avenue, Virginia Street, Alpine Road, Brook Road, Edwards Street and Bartlett Street.

In all but one case, the homeowners were away for a few days and returned to find their homes broken into and ransacked of prescription medication and loose change.

Police have increased patrols in the areas, and are urging residents to remain vigilant of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity.

Police advise homeowners to leave a light on a timer and tell a neighbor if they plan to be away, have someone pick up any mail and newspapers, bring in trash and recycling containers, and report suspicious activity to the police department at 874-8575.
