Vassallo, Frost earn victories at MDI Marathon

Dan Vassallo of Peabody, Massachusetts, broke the course record Sunday while winning the Mount Desert Island Marathon, and Leah Frost of Glover, Vermont, won the women’s title for the third time in four years.

Vassallo, a 31-year-old Colby College graduate who also holds the Maine Marathon course record, finished in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 45 seconds. He lowered Michael Crouch’s 1-year-old record (2:26:55) by more than five minutes and beat runner-up Craig Coon (2:32:26) of Malta, New York, by more than 10 minutes.

Frost, a 33-year-old Round Pond native, successfully defended her women’s title with a time of 2:54:32. Heather Utrata (2:59:50) of Greeley, Colorado, edged Marina Orrson (2:59:54) of Shavertown, Pennsylvania, for second place.

Eric Ashe (1:09:46), 28, of Boston and Michelle Lilienthal (1:18:34), 34, of Portland were the half marathon champions.
