AUBURN — Chandler Hartigan kicked a tie-breaking 27-yard field goal late in the third quarter, and Cheverus held on for a 17-14 win over Edward Little in a Class A North football game Friday night.
Edward Little (2-2) drove inside the Cheverus 10 late in the game, but Kieran Conley intercepted a pass on third-and-goal with 1:44 remaining.
Cheverus (3-1) opened the scoring on a 63-yard pass from Jack Casale to Griffin Watson with 9:44 left in the second quarter.
Edward Little tied it on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Grant Hartley to Tyler Blanchard on the final play of the half.
The Stags regained the lead on their opening drive of the third quarter when Dominic Casale caught a 97-yard touchdown pass from Jack Casale on third-and-26.
Tyler Blanchard caught a screen pass from Hartley and scored an 82-yard touchdown later in the third quarter to tie the game at 14-14.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Red Eddies drove deep into Cheverus territory but fumbled near the goal line, and Cheverus recovered in the end zone for a touchback.
CAPE ELIZABETH 42, FREEPORT 6: Jeb Boeschenstein completed 11 of 12 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Capers (4-0) over the visiting Falcons (2-2) at Hannaford Field.
Peyton Weatherbie carried 10 times for 103 yards and the game’s first touchdown, a 33-yard run a little over a minute into the game.
Camden Turner (36 yards), Nat Spicer (21) and Marshall Peterson (6) each caught touchdown passes from Boeschenstein. Peterson also caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Hartel, and Spicer intercepted a pass for the game’s only turnover.
The Capers led 35-0 at the half. Brett McAlister scored from 3 yards out early in the fourth quarter. Peterson was 3 for 3 on PAT kicks and Alex Morin was 1 for 2.
Freeport averted the shutout with a 34-yard pass from Josh Burke to T.J. Morrill on the final play from scrimmage.
BONNY EAGLE 52, MASSABESIC 6: Alex Sprague rushed for 168 yards and five touchdowns, and the Scots (4-0) raced out to a 39-0 halftime lead against the Mustangs (0-4) at Waterboro.
Sprague scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the first quarter and added TD runs of 5, 2 and 43 yards in the second quarter.
Bonny Eagle’s other first-quarter TD was a 14-yard pass from Cam Day to Kordell Menard.
Jake Cook and Connor Sirois each added a rushing touchdown in the second half.
The lone Massabesic touchdown was a 1-yard run by Owen Roberts in the fourth quarter.
MARSHWOOD 31, LEAVITT 6: Kyle Glidden caught a touchdown pass and also ran for a score as the Hawks (2-2) defeated the Hornets (1-3) at Turner.
Glidden opened the scoring with a 3-yard run in the second quarter and Max Horton added a 30-yard field goal to make it 10-0 at halftime.
On Marshwood’s first possession of the second half, Glidden caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Cole McDaniel.
Leavitt cut the deficit to 17-6 on a 2-yard run by Hunter Sirois early in the fourth, but Chris Sarzynski answered with a 1-yard touchdown run with eight minutes remaining. The score was set up by a Glidden interception.
Sarzynski rushed for over 100 yards.
OCEANSIDE 27, WATERVILLE 0: Gage Robinson and Nate Ray each scored two touchdowns as the Mariners (3-1) cruised to a win over the Panthers (0-4).
Ray rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and blocked a punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Robinson opened the scoring with a 45-yard run in the first quarter and added a 1-yard run in the second quarter.
WINTHROP/MONMOUTH 39, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 8: Matt Ingram threw four touchdown passes – three of them to Nate Scott – as the Ramblers (4-0) beat the Seagulls (1-2) in Old Orchard Beach.
Ingram gave the Ramblers an early lead with a 40-yard pass to Bennett Brooks. A fumble recovery by Scott at the OOB 25 set up his first touchdown catch, a 22-yarder that made it 12-0 after one quarter.
Scott took a screen pass 70 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, then added a 27-yard TD reception in the third quarter.
SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 51, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 6: Austin Darling had first-half touchdown runs of 30 and 55 yards and caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Caulin Parker as the Phoenix (2-2) opened a 30-0 halftime lead and cruised past the Patriots (0-4) at Gray.
Parker opened the scoring with a 40-yard run. Dillon Webster, Brett Duvall and Kayle Stewart each added second-half rushing touchdowns.
Elijah Simmons got Gray-New Gloucester on the board with a 65-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
