WATERVILLE — Jason Bard says he and his mother, Jill Bard, have owned Scotty’s Pizza for nearly 26 years, and Saturday night was the first time they’ve ever been robbed.
A young man wearing a ski mask, gloves and a black hoodie came into the Water Street business around 9:30 p.m. Saturday armed with a handgun, police said, and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The store has eight surveillance cameras, but it’s hard to identify the robber because he was covered up, Bard said. The robber was also in and out very quickly, he said.
Jill Bard, 70, who co-owns the store with her son, was working that night, he said. She’s doing all right now and is more angry about it than anything, Bard said.
“A lot of customers were mad that it happened, too,” he said in his store on Tuesday. He said a lot of their customers call Jill “Mom” because they’ve been coming to the store so long, so they were especially angered to hear that she was the one who got held up.
Bard doesn’t think the robber was a local, or at least not a longtime resident. For local people, he said, “this is their store,” and some have been coming there since they were kids. He said the store has previously been burglarized after closing at night.
Police are still investigating the case and have asked that anyone with information call 680-4700 and ask for Detective Josh Woods.
