WATERVILLE – Stuart William MacKenzie, born Dec. 15, 1953, in Portland, passed away peacefully at Mount Joseph’s of Waterville, where he was lovingly and compassionately cared for by the dedicated staff.
The son of the late James and Judith MacKenzie, Stuart grew up in South Portland and attended Roosevelt Elementary and Mahoney Junior High School.
Known affectionately as “Stu” to his friends, he was a familiar face around Portland, a city he proudly called his stomping ground. Stu had a lifelong passion for politics and could often be found lending a hand at Democratic campaign headquarters, eager to contribute and connect with others.
Stu also had a deep love for classic films, especially old Westerns and World War II movies, with John Wayne as his favorite actor. The Christmas season held a special place in his heart—he loved watching White Christmas with Bing Crosby and It’s a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart, while listening to the timeless voices of Nat King Cole singing Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire and Frank Sinatra’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
He is survived by his brothers Douglas, Bruce, and Duncan MacKenzie, and his sister, Jean MacKenzie.
Stuart had a simple faith and often described himself as a Christian believer. He now begins a new and never ending story filled with beauty, and love, joy, and peace.
