A 14-year-old student at King Middle School was grabbed on the wrist by a stranger while walking to school Thursday, but police said she wasn’t injured and the incident was not intentionally harmful.
Principal Amy Marx said in a Thursday evening letter to families that a teacher was also walking in the area along Park Avenue at the time of the incident and called police, then walked with the student the rest of the way to the school.
Marx said the student then gave a full report to Portland police. The police department said in a release Friday that after investigating and interviewing the suspect, they determined the situation was “not nefarious in nature,” and said the student’s family did not want to pursue charges.
The principal shared the news with families so they could remind students about the importance of walking in groups or pairs when possible and always taking the safest routes.
“King, as a community, will continue to support our students and families to continue to be safe while walking to and from school and will be working with the Portland community police to monitor the areas where many of our students are walking before and after school,” Marx wrote.
The police statement included a list of school safety tips, which include reporting any uncomfortable experiences to school leaders and walking with a buddy on well-lit routes.
The news comes less than two months after a man exposed himself to King Middle School students playing on a swing set near the school. School officials called the police, and said afterward that they planned to review safety measures.
