BATH — The defending Class B boys soccer champions from Greely High showed their mettle by tying the South final Thursday against rival Yarmouth with 91 seconds to play in regulation.
That meant it was up to Yarmouth, the winner of four straight state titles prior to last year’s regional final loss to the Rangers, to answer back.
Zacarias Binda had the correct answer – with much needed accuracy. Binda sent a hard shot into the left panel with 3:20 to play in the second overtime for a 2-1 win at McMann Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Hard-working sophomore wing Trevor Hunt won a ball near the end line and spotted Binda, who had purposely backed up to find an open pocket to the right of the goal. Binda needed to be precise because Greely goalie Landon Dominski had proven he would not be beaten by an ordinary shot while making 11 saves and numerous quick, decisive moves to shut down attacks.
“It was a beautiful thing. Trevor, he beat like two guys and then that guy at the front post. He looked at me and then I had to go back, get a good angle when the ball comes,” Binda said.
Hunt played a pivotal role for Yarmouth, repeatedly winning duels along the right side. He played more than usual because starting outside back Ian Minnihan was sick and forward Marcelino Mulumbu had his minutes limited because of an injury.
“With some injuries in the lineup. I knew that if I get a shot, I’ve got to give my all, and that’s what I tried to do,” Hunt said. “It feels good. Really, it was just the whole team, but I’m glad that I was a part of it.”
Yarmouth (15-1-1), the top seed in the region, advances to the state championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Edward Little High in Auburn against North champion Oceanside, which beat John Bapst, 2-1, also in overtime.
No. 2 Greely finished 14-3, all three losses coming by one goal to Yarmouth.
“They got us three times this year,” Greely coach Mike Andreasen said. “You know, you beat someone three times, I have to tip my hat to them. They’re a good team.”
Yarmouth held a lead for much of the game, scoring on a sharply struck header by Finn Grimnes off a corner kick to the back post by Gideon Ahrens in the 23rd minute.
The Clippers continued to have control and the preponderance of scoring chances for the first 25 minutes of the second half. But as time wore on, Yarmouth’s offense slowed. For 10-plus minutes, the Clippers’ defense repelled Greely, with center back Ian Lawrence consistently winning header duels and Nate Buchanan and Owen Advani making firm clears.
But the flow had shifted toward Greely’s offensive third.
Greely captain Connor Skillin ran down a ball in the left corner and sent a low, hard cross to the middle of the field. Gavin Byrne ran onto the ball and one-timed it past Julian Gebhardt (three saves) for the tying goal.
“For holding out for that long and then to have that happen with a minute-thirty left, you always worry about what does that do to the morale of the kids on the field,” said Yarmouth coach Justin Morrill. “You could see it lowered a bit, but they came back for the first overtime and brought it back to where we needed it to be.”
