Saco residents on Tuesday elected Jeffery Onnen as the new Ward 4 city councilor.
Onnen received 696 votes, while his opponent, Donald Pilon, received 510 votes. Onnen will replace Michael Burman, who decided not to run again.
Onnen currently serves as the vice chair of the Saco Shoreline Commission, and said his time in that role led him to run for the council.
Onnen said Saco needs to “manage its growth,” while responsibly bringing new families, new businesses, and new ideas to the city.
“We need to begin to execute the plans that Saco has in place,” he said. “I believe that I am the best candidate for what needs to happen next in Saco.”
Pilon said he decided to run because Saco is a “wonderful community which offers many advantages to its residents,” and the City Council is “central” to how the city runs.
“I fully understand the roles and responsibilities of City Council as an entity, as well as the role of each councilor to support the needs of our residents,” Pilon said. “I believe my experience will bring value to the community.”
Turnout was steady on Tuesday.
For one voter, the issue of gun control remained central.
Alex, who did not share his last name, said he hopes the state is “one step closer” to gun control after Tuesday’s election.
“Everyone complains about the state of the world, but if you don’t come out and vote, do you have the right to complain?” he said.
Another voter, Megan Marshall, said she voted on Tuesday because she likes “being part of the community.”
“This feels like an opportunity to do something measurable,” Marshall said as she left the polling station.
Sam Gilliam said that voting was a way to get involved in the community.
“I just moved here, and I felt it was important to get out and vote,” Gilliam said.
