Cape Elizabeth police arrested a man Wednesday after he allegedly shot at a tow truck on Longfellow Drive.

The driver of the tow truck was a repossession agent, according to police. The 61-year-old man, who was inside the house on Longfellow Drive, fired at least one shot at the truck while it was in the process of removing the vehicle, Cape Elizabeth police said in a news release Thursday.

Police responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m., and the Cape Elizabeth man was taken into custody about an hour later, police said.

The 61-year-old is accused of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and attempted elevated aggravated assault. He is in custody at the Cumberland County Jail, and his bail is set at $100,060, according to jail staff.

Police say a woman and a 4-month-old baby were inside the truck at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured.

Cape Elizabeth police Chief Paul Fenton said Wednesday that after the man was taken into custody, officers saw “some concerning things” at the house. The Portland police bomb squad arrived late Wednesday afternoon to search the house, he said.

Police said in their Thursday news release that officers found “suspicious” items in the house but that they don’t present any threat to the wider community.

Barry Brinker, who lives a few houses down from the scene, told a reporter Wednesday that she was at home when she heard a “bang” that she originally thought came from a car. But after her husband called to tell her their street was on lockdown, she watched from her house as a neighbor was detained.

She said it’s “always disturbing to see a neighbor struggling.”
